Summary
We are looking for an experienced, highly reliable Finance Operations Lead / Controller to help own and continuously improve the finance function across a growing global business.
This is not a traditional bookkeeping role, and it is not a strategic CFO role.
CPA License is a must. CA, ACCA, CMA or equivalent credentials are valuable
We need someone who can operate in the middle:
Understand the complete financial cycle
Ensure the numbers are reliable
Review and guide the work of finance administrators/bookkeepers
Identify risks before management has to ask
Improve processes and controls
Support finance operations across multiple countries and entities
Use AI, automation and lightweight internal tools to make the finance organization more accurate, scalable and efficient
The most important qualities for this role are reliability, trust, maturity, ownership and financial judgment.
We are looking for someone who can be trusted to look after the finance operation, recognize when something does not make sense, ask the right questions and follow issues through to resolution.
AI and automation experience is important, but it does not replace strong finance fundamentals.
What You Will Own
Financial Operations & Control
You will help oversee the complete finance operating cycle, including:
Month-end close and financial reporting
P&L and balance-sheet review
Bank and balance-sheet reconciliations
Accounts receivable
Accounts payable
Billing
Cash management
Working-capital monitoring
13-week cash-flow forecasting
Journal-entry review
Accruals and prepayments
Budgeting and budget-versus-actual analysis
Financial controls
Management reporting
Audit and year-end support
Coordination with external accountants, tax specialists and other advisors
You should be comfortable looking across the entire financial operation rather than being specialized only in AP, AR, tax or another individual area.
Global Finance Operations
Our business operates across multiple markets.
You do not need to personally be an expert in every country's tax, legal or accounting rules.
You do need enough financial maturity and experience to recognize when something may create a:
Tax issue
Compliance issue
Accounting issue
Cross-border issue
Cash-flow risk
Control weakness
Reporting issue
You should be comfortable saying:
“I don't yet have enough information to approve this. Here are the questions we need answered, here is the risk I see, and here is where we may need specialist advice.”
We value that judgment much more than someone pretending to know every answer.
Leadership & Ownership
You will help supervise and develop finance administrators and bookkeepers.
This includes:
Reviewing their work
Establishing clear procedures
Creating appropriate controls
Identifying recurring mistakes
Coaching team members
Improving documentation
Assigning ownership clearly
Ensuring important activities are completed without management repeatedly following up
We are looking for someone who naturally takes responsibility for the outcome, not simply completion of a task.
If something looks wrong, you investigate it.
If something is unclear, you ask.
If a process repeatedly fails, you improve the process.
If management has missed a risk, you raise it.
AI, Automation & Finance Systems
A major part of this role is helping us build a more modern finance operation.
We want someone who is already experimenting with or actively using tools such as:
Claude
Claude Projects
Claude Code
ChatGPT or similar AI tools
AI-assisted coding tools
Automation platforms
APIs
Advanced spreadsheets
Scripts
No-code / low-code tools
Finance system integrations
You do not need to be a professional software engineer.
You should, however, be comfortable using technology and AI to solve operational problems.
Examples of what we want to build
You may help create:
Scheduled financial analyses
Automated daily or weekly finance reviews
Exception-based reconciliation workflows
AR aging analysis and collection prioritization
Automated billing checks
Cash-flow monitoring
Budget-versus-actual analysis
Expense anomaly detection
Month-end close checklists
Balance-sheet account review workflows
Scheduled audit and control checks
Management reporting
AI-assisted investigation of unusual transactions
Finance knowledge bases
SOP and policy assistants
Internal finance dashboards
Workflow tools for finance administrators
The objective is not to automate financial judgment away.
The objective is to automate repetitive work and make exceptions, risks and decisions easier for experienced humans to identify.
How We Think About AI
We are looking for someone who understands the difference between:
What can safely be automated
and
What still requires human judgment, review and approval.
For example, AI may help:
Analyze transactions
Compare reports
Identify anomalies
Prepare summaries
Investigate supporting information
Draft communications
Prioritize exceptions
But important accounting decisions, financial controls and money movement still require appropriate human review.
You should naturally think about:
Accuracy
Auditability
Controls
Data security
Approval workflows
Human verification
Documentation
when designing AI-enabled finance processes.
What We Care About Most
1. Reliability
If you say something will be done, it gets done.
Management should not have to repeatedly follow up.
2. Trust & Integrity
You will have visibility into highly sensitive financial information.
We need someone with mature judgment and a strong sense of professional responsibility.
3. Financial Judgment
You notice when the numbers don't make sense.
You know what questions to ask.
You understand that a report being generated successfully does not mean the report is correct.
4. Ownership
You follow problems through to resolution instead of simply handing them to someone else.
5. Critical Thinking
You challenge assumptions respectfully and are comfortable telling management when you believe something requires further investigation.
6. Curiosity & Learning
You actively learn new systems, technologies and ways of working.
7. Process Improvement
You naturally look at repetitive or error-prone processes and ask:
“Can we design this better?”
Experience We Are Looking For
Ideally you have:
7+ years of progressive accounting or finance experience
Experience as a Financial Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, Finance Manager, Finance Operations Lead or similar
Experience owning or substantially managing month-end close
Strong understanding of financial statements
Strong balance-sheet reconciliation experience
Cash-flow forecasting experience
AP and AR oversight
Budgeting and variance analysis
Experience reviewing other people's accounting work
Experience managing or mentoring finance staff
Strong Excel or Google Sheets skills
Experience with QuickBooks, Xero, NetSuite or similar accounting systems
Strong professional English
Experience working with North American or international businesses
Experience supporting multiple entities, countries or currencies is strongly preferred.
AI / Automation Experience
We would particularly like to meet candidates who can demonstrate something they have actually built.
Examples include:
A Claude Project used as a finance knowledge or analysis system
An automated monthly reporting process
A recurring financial audit/checking workflow
A reconciliation tool
An AI-assisted AR or collections process
A financial dashboard
A workflow connecting several systems
An automated variance-analysis process
An internal finance tool built using AI-assisted coding
A process that substantially reduced manual finance work
Simply saying “I use ChatGPT” is not what we are looking for.
We want to understand:
What problem did you identify?
What did you build?
How did it work?
What controls did you put around it?
What changed as a result?
Location & Schedule
We are particularly interested in candidates based in LATAM because strong overlap with the Toronto / Eastern North American workday is important.
Candidates elsewhere may still be considered if they can provide substantial working-hour overlap.
Compensation
depending on experience, demonstrated financial judgment, leadership capability and ability to improve systems.
We may also consider beginning with an experienced candidate on a part-time or trial basis.
Hiring Process
We intend to move quickly, but we will evaluate this position carefully.
The process will include:
Application review
Short screening interview
Financial judgment interview
Paid practical assessment
Final discussion
Reference checks
Practical Assessment
Finalists will receive a fictional company's financial and operational information, which may include:
P&L
Balance sheet
General ledger
Bank reconciliations
AP aging
AR aging
Payroll information
Budget
Cash-flow forecast
Prior-period results
You will be asked to identify:
Problems
Risks
Unusual trends
Missing information
Questions you would ask
What you would investigate
What you would require before approving the financial reporting
There will also be a process-improvement / AI exercise.
We may provide a manual finance workflow and ask you to explain how you would redesign it using better processes, automation and AI.
We care about how you think, not simply whether you find every planted accounting error.

What is the most significant finance operation you have personally owned or managed?
Please explain your responsibilities, company size and team size.

What did you do?
